Together for Sustainability (TfS) is a procurement-driven initiative to improve transparency and sustainability in chemical companies’ supply chains.
The CPOs of chemical companies BASF, Bayer, Evonik, Henkel, Lanxess and Solvay came together and launched it in 2011 to encourage greater adoption of sustainability practices, improve auditing and compliance, and simplify the assessment process for organisations and suppliers in the chemical industry. The ongoing assessments and audit processes carried out by third parties and independent audit companies evaluate a range of areas, including management of sustainability policies and performance. Almost 10,000 evaluations have been carried out and 1,187 audits have been conducted since the start of the initiative.
The advantage to suppliers is that the process only needs to be carried out once, and all member organisations – numbering 20 in Europe and North America by the end of 2017 – can access the data. Member companies benefit from reduced bureaucracy, a simple way to ensure regulations are adhered to and a clear route to improved conditions where required. Feedback shows that all parties appreciate having a starting point for conversation and collaboration.
Judges said: “An excellent joint initiative with clear results and engagement with the supply chain. The training programme and approach to improvement make it an inclusive initiative for suppliers.”
